The Lynching of Benjamin Hance

Writer's picture: St. Mary's County Museum DivisionSt. Mary's County Museum Division

This episode of the St. Mary's County Museum Division's "Wayback Wednesday" video series discusses the important story of Benjamin Hance, a black man from St. Mary's County, who was dragged out of jail and lynched by a mob of local townspeople in Leonardtown.

This may NOT be an easy story to hear, but one we MUST nonetheless tell, so as to bring to light the injustices of the past so we may never repeat them in the future. After watching this episode, please read the statement by the Commissioners of St. Mary's County reaffirming the county's commitment to diversity, inclusion, freedom and justice for all.
