Baltimore County LMP
In May 2021, the Baltimore County Lynching Memorial Project, in partnership with the Equal Justice Initiative, installed an historical marker to commemorate the 1885 lynching of 15-year old Howard Cooper. It marks not the end, but the beginning of our journey from truth to reconciliation in Baltimore County.
Cooper's lynching was one of 38 documented racial terror lynchings in Maryland, and more than 6,500 in the country.
For generations this dark history has been dismissed, marginalized and denied. But we know the legacy of lynching continues to grip our national psyche in profoundly damaging ways.
The Baltimore County LMP is committed to confronting the uncomfortable truth about the history of racial terror lynching in our community, to help our neighbors understand the ways in which that legacy continues to be manifest, and to promote racial healing and reconciliation in Baltimore County and Maryland through a variety of informational and community building events, public outreach and education.
