On the July 13th anniversary of Howard Cooper's lynching, the Baltimore County Coalition of the MLMP held a community event which included dignitaries and an inaugural spoken word exhibition. Remarks by Public Defender Gayle Robinson, Baltimore County Police Department Chief Melissa Hyatt, and Reverand Osbourne Robinson (St. James AUMP) framed the moving event. Reflections in poetry, presented by middle school students in Baltimore County, used Cooper's lynching as inspiration to combat tactics that deny truths about racism in our state. Students composed poems that expressed perspectives on or personal experience with racism. Like the historical marker that was installed for Howard Cooper this past May, the poems bring public attention to injustice as a necessary step toward achieving racial harmony. The evening was brought to a close by gifted 10th grader Rose Black, who presented an original poem.
If you are an 8th grade student in Baltimore County - check back later this year for information on the 2022 Spoken Word Contest.
